THE CASINO THEATRE
John Khatter’s movie theatre, ‘THE CASINO’, built on the corner of Victoria Road and Mount Pleasant Street, opened in 1914, featuring live acts and silent movies and went to ‘talkies’ in 1929. The building suffered a fire and was demolished in 1990 by wrecking ball. There have been no movie theatre’s for over 30 years in the pier. Many children enjoyed sneaking into the Casino through the coal chutes. This large projector had to be dismantled and lugged around the corner to the museum piece by piece. It was reassembled and given a place of honor. This task was done by: Frank Dunn, Ron DiPenta and Charlie Roberts.
Photos below are of the large and heavy projector salvaged for the Whitney Pier Historical Museum days before the fire. It had been closed for many years before 1990.
